The top of the world!

ok, well maybe only the top of central america, but it was still mighty impressive! Volcan Tajamulco is the highest volcano and highest point in central america at 4222 metres (plus or minus). the hike was stunning and a challenge (Meighan finished 200 metres ahead of James if anyone cares). It was only a two day (one night) hike, but it felt like 4. we had to get up at 4 in the morning on saturday to be there at 4:45. we slept in because the alarm clock was set for 4 in the pm not the am. phone rang 10 times, we finally heard and grabbed our stuff and ran to the park (3 minutes and we were both totally sucking wind...we are totally soft). we woke up a taxi who drove us way to fast down cobble stone streets (only because meighan kept saying...rapido, rapido por favor). we were late but the bus hadn´t left. stupìd canadians can´t get up early!

a two hour chicken bus ride and we were on the trail. 5.5 miles and 1700 metres of elevation gain left us sucking wind for the second, third, fourth, etc times that day. we finally got to base camp after many rests (and potty breaks for james as the bad bowels made a triumphant reappearance). set up camp and climb a nearby peak for sunset (which was amazing...pacific coast, chiapas, guatemala, fluffy clouds, and lots of cold wind). back down for supper and in bed by 7:30 (very cold and tired). get up a 3:30 in the morning for an early climb the last 200 metres to top of central america for the most amazing sunrise (and if you look closely at one of the pics an errupting Volcano Santa Aguito, one of the most active volcanoes in the world). it was well worth effort for sure!

and of course the spanish lessons are going well too!

talk to you soon. J&M

Good Morning!

Your entry is nothing short of magnificent! We can see the volcano errupting in the background.

We can only imagine that the trip down was a "slide".

Take care,

Love,

Hi Meighan and James

So sorry I haven't written in a while. I have been checking on your blog regularly and am amazed at the country you are seeing. I so want to go to all of these places. The views are amazing and I imagine the hike was enjoyable outside of the breathing. I know we will have that to look forward to when we go to Peru.

Rylan's volleyball team finished first in their division and zones but lost out in the quarter finals for the provincials. The team did well and we're proud of them all. He really did enjoy himself more this year.
Nash has been playing soccer and they are doing well. We are off to Lethbridge this weekend for a tournament.
Shivon is busy writing finals these next couple of weeks. She is really enjoying this which is exciting. Her goal is to move out next summer so we will see. I told her you better make sure you are ready because you can't move back in.
Chris and I went to Banff this last weekend. It was great to get away for a couple of nights.
Sadie has made herself very welcome within our home. She is one of us, but needs to learn some of the rules of the house. Nash and her have obedience classes starting in January. She was upset with me today as I had to raise my voice as she wouldn't let me catch her. She just looks at me with her puppy dog eyes. She sure doesn't like me to get upset with her. Nash told her, "Don't make Grandma mad! or else! (that would be me) Chris and I are her grandparents.
Anyways should run, but keep the pictures and stories coming. I so enjoy reading up on your adventures. Enjoy yourselves to the fullest!
