sorry for the delay in posting...too much going on in Mexico D.F. to stop for internet. lots to catch up on so maybe we will do a couple posts so you can see the happenings. in a nutshell, we left guadalajara last week and went to morelia, then tried to drive to cuarnavaca, got lost in mexico city for 5 hours and then finally made it out. took the bus back in the next day and we were on our feet for 2 days straight to try to fit it all in (and i would say we did pretty well).
the drive in was supposed to be easy, just take the exit and go around the valley on a scenic side highway...missed that turn and every turn after that for 4 hours. the driving really was not that hard, but there are no bloody signs that make sense, just random places on the map...no street names, and sometime the main road will just end with a small exit and an off ramp going in the other direction. it did not help that we drove clear through the middle of town and got caught in road work on the opposite side...6 lanes of traffic merging on to two war torn chicken trails is a sight to behold...we almost got the side mirrors ripped off...twice by semis...and i bumped some guy in front of us trying to cut off a semi. barely even gave me a second thought...a smile and wave and we were back trying to get into another lane! lots of swearing and frustration and we enjoyed a tall vaso of vino when we got to cuernavaca. if your willing to loosen me up with a few pints when we get back i will tell you all about it.
it is cold here right now...we have been wearing pants and jackets. mexico city was very fun and a very welcoming and easy city to get around in...or so we found. the metro is superfast and easy, if not crowded, and the people were friendly and welcoming. we did lots, Frida gallery, Palacio National for some Diego Riviera murals, the zocalo square, the cathedral (roof top tour), El Nivel (first cantina in all of mexico...or so the proudly displayed license suggests), the Alameda park, some Lucha Libra at Arena Mexico, the image of the Virgen of Guadalupe at the Basilica, drank our first pulque, toured the Templo Mayor (aztec ruins in the centre of the city and the centre of the aztec universe). all made for a very busy two days...but we are glad we went. i would recommend mexico city in a heartbeat, although the smog did not treat our eyes, nose and skin very well.
tomorrow we head to Oaxaca for 1 week to partake in the day of the dead festivities...should be blast.
